One of the biggest problems I have had to face with my patients as a skin therapist over the years and one of the biggest mistakes my patients make is over-exfoliation. Exfoliation should be done 1-2 times a week unless the patient has a specific skin condition which requires it to be done 3 times a week. It is often recommended to people that they use acids or “mild enzymes” on a daily basis to treat their skin, but that is incorrect due to the fact that it will cause you to put stress on your skin which will lead to irritation and no benefits for your skin. In other words, you will just be bringing on another issue you will have to take of care of!

Common signs of over-exfoliation include:

Irritation, burning or peeling Redness and/or inflammation Breakouts, especially in the form of small pimples Increased sensitivity to other products you may use in your skin care routine

One symptom of over exfoliation that is harder to pinpoint:

The skin may develop a tight, wax-like texture which can be confused for a “healthy glow.”

Over-exfoliation is a common problem I have seen my patients face over the years which can be easily prevented with a proper consultation that can guide you in the right direction to improve the overall health of your skin!

Remember.. More is not always better!
